BHS wins home invite

One was a lop sided game dominated by a pitcher, the other was all about hitting.

What mattered for the Thunderbird softball team was that both games were won by them, as the stood up to the competition of their own Boo Invite, Saturday at Pierce Park.

The Baraboo High School softball team beat Pioneer Westfield, 7-0 on the strength of a one-hitter by Danielle Vander Schaaf in the first game of the four-team tournament. BHS then ripped 11 hits in a 7-4 win over Franklin in the championship, with Sara Olsen getting four of those hits.

Vander Schaaf struck out 11 batters and walked just one in the opener, while Tiff Stanek went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the team's seven-hit attack.

The T-Birds scored three runs in the first inning, and added single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth to put the game away.

The Pioneers helped the Baraboo offense by making five errors in the game.

In the second game, BHS pitcher ran up against a strong hitting Franklin team. While Stanek didn't overpower the Sabers, as she has with many of the teams she's thrown against this season, she kept the Thunderbirds in front the whole game.

Stanek fanned 12 batters, while walking two and allowing seven hits.

Baraboo scored twice in the first inning and put up three more runs in the fourth to go up 5-1.

Franklin got a pair of runs in the sixth and added one more in the seven but couldn't generate enough offense off Stanek.

Besides Olsen's 4-for-4 performance at the plate, Carly Brecka and Abby Schlender were each 2-for-4. The Thunderbirds had 11 hits as a team.

Baraboo's next game will be Tuesday at Waunakee.
