Baraboo boys will stay home
MADISON — Without having a singles player or doubles team seeded at the Badger Conference tennis tournament, the Baraboo High School boys tennis team was at the mercy of the draw. The draw wasn't kind to the Thunderbirds. BHS sent two singles players and two doubles teams on to the second round of the tournament. In the second round, they were matched up against the No. 1 seed twice and the No. 2 seed in that bracket once. Partly because of the tough competition the T-Birds ran up against, they weren't able to send anyone on to the second day of the tournament. "All the guys made a good effort," BHS coach Karll Kruse said. "We had a good week of practice. We played hard against some tough draws." No. 1 singles player Graham Greve was the only one to win a first-round match and not have to take on a No. 1 or 2 seed in the second round. He beat Stoughton's Brian Coffin, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, then went up against third-seeded Adam Means of Verona in the second. Means won that match, 6-3, 6-1. No. 4 singles player Ian McArthur beat Reedsburg's James Thew, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round but lost to top seeded Andrew Witmer of Verona, 6-0, 6-2 after that. Baraboo's best chance of getting through to the second day was at No. 1 doubles, where Kris Kruse and Alex Boehlke teamed up and beat Sauk Prairie's Nelson and Lendved, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. But in the second round, they ran up against top-seeded Paradise and VanRybroek of Madison Edgewood. The duo from Edgewood won 6-3, 6-0. BHS No. 2 doubles team Justin Graupman and Matt Grill swept through the first round over Reedsburg's Piefri and Lavely, then lost to second-seeded Lagman and Meicher of Edgewood, 6-1, 6-2. Alex Mann, playing at No. 2 singles, lost to John Loomans of Portage in his first match, 7-5, 6-0. No. 3 singles player Jordan Wyss lost 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Stoughton's Cobi Krumholz. The No. 3 doubles team of Jonathon Wise and Scotty Szymanski were defeated by Waunakee's Hart and Przybelski, 6-1, 6-2. "We'll take it and hope for some better draws," coach Kruse said. The Thunderbirds will compete in the La Crosse Central subsectional Monday, which will be held at St. T's Tennis & Sports in Winona, Minn.
