Riptide turn up the heat in win
Under a crystal-blue sky and with plenty of long-awaited sunshine, The Baraboo Riptide hosted The Sauk Prairie Pool Sharks in their second conference meet of the season. The Riptide swam to victory with a score of 423.5 points to the Pool Sharks' 237.5. The Riptide took an early lead by winning seven of 10 races in the medley relay. The 8 & Under girls team of Giselle Riem, Chloe Feld, Hannah Vittengl, and Zoe Herdina swam to the first win of the day for the Riptide. Coach Sarah Wise said she was very happy with how the 8 & Under kids swam. "They've really improved from last week, despite having a number of practices cancelled because of the weather," Wise said. Both the 9-10 girls and boys teams won medley relays, with teams of Sophia Oettinger, Isabel Schmelzer, Hanna Mueller, and Laken Murphy for the girls, and Ian Baird, Collin Feld, Noah Larson, and Sean Cormican leading the boys. Likewise, the 13-14 age group was dominated by the Riptide in the medley relay. Swimming to first for the girls were Sharri Waldron, Gemma Pillsbury, Karli Didrickson, and Kayla Hanson, and for the boys it was Michael Prochaska, Yler Krszjzanick, Matthew Livingston, and Jacob Hackbarth. Swimming to first for the 11-12 Girls in the medley relay were Maddie Mahoney, Alexandra Schwarz, Samantha Terry, and Catherine Livingston. The team of Emily O'Rourke, Shannon Keeling, Emma Raymond, and Emily Thompson won their medley relay for the 15-18 girls. In the second event of the day, the freestyle, the 11-12 Girls were impressive, with Kara Smiley, Catherine Livingston, and Julia Baird going 1-2-3. The 11-12 girls dominated their age group, swimming to first place in every event. Other winners in the freestyle included Sophia Oettinger, Sean Cormican, and Kayla Hanson. The Riptide 13-14 girls were strong in the backstroke. Winning the top three places were Kayla Hanson, Sharri Waldron, and Austin Hanger. Other winners in the backstroke were Chloe Feld, Kara Smiley, Alex Noonan, and Kody Mjelde. Four Riptide took first in the individual medley — Hannah Mueller, Collin Feld, Samantha Terry, and Gemma Pillsbury. The Riptide made a clean sweep in the breaststroke, as Chloe Feld, Connor Grogan, Isabel Schmelzer, Collin Feld, Audra Riem, Brian Cormican, Gemma Pillsbury, Tyler Krszjzanick, Shannon Keeling, and Kody Mjelde finished in first place. The Riptide were strong in the long freestyle races, winning seven of the 10 races. Taking first were Hannah Vittengl, Sophia Oettinger, Sean Cormican, Samantha Terry, Gemma Pillsbury, Matthew Livingston, and David Riesch. Two age groups swept up the top three places in the long freestyle, with Zoe Herdina and Sarah Anderson taking second and third for the 8 & under girls, and Michael Prochaska and Jeremy Collier taking taking second and third for the 13-14 boys. In the last individual event of the day, the butterfly, The Riptide continued to show their strength with Zoe Herdina, Hannah Mueller, Collin Feld, Samantha Terry, Matthew Livingston, and Nicholas Craker winning their races. The Riptide continued to ride the victory wave into the last event of the day, the freestyle relays. Taking first for the 8 & under girls was the team of Giselle Riem, Zoe Herdina, Sarah Anderson, and Hannah Vittengl. The 9-10 girls and boys took first place in their relays with Laken Murphy, Isabel Schmelzer, Lara Riem and Hannah Muller for the girls, and for the boys it was Ian Baird, Paddy O'Rourke, Patrick Sandoval, and Sean Cormican. The 11-12 girls and boys also swam to first in their freestyle relays. For the girls it was Maddie Mahoney, Catherine Livingston, Julia Baird, and Kara Smiley. Swimming for the boys were Brian Cormican, Daniel O'Rourke, Kevin Tobin, and Tanner Craker. The 13-14 boys and 15-18 boys teams won their relays, with Matthew Garica, Logan Rabata, Tyler Krszjzanick, and Jacob Hackbarth for the 13-14 group, and Ethan Bartol-Byers, Nicholas Craker, Bryan Schwarz, and Joey Grogan for the 15-18 boys. There were a number of four-time winners in the meet. Taking first place in all four of their events were Sean Cormican, Collin Feld, Hannah Mueller, Samantha Terry, and Gemma Pillsbury. "We looked a lot better this week," said head coach Lynn Keeling. "We have a lot of talent and great attitudes. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the kids will be able to keep working hard." The Baraboo Riptide will host the Mazomanie Barracudas, Saturday at the Baraboo Outdoor Pool.
