With four games in five days against very stubborn competition, the Baraboo Thunderbirds boys soccer team sat most of its starters on Friday, but got great performances from its reserves, trumping visiting Mauston, 8-4.

"I think we played great during what was a grueling schedule," said Riddell, after the T-Birds went 1-2-1 this week. "We're coming together at the right time. Other than we gave up some goals, we're playing good soccer. We're communicating and really playing well."

Five players helped BHS score six goals in the first half, staking the team a 5-1 lead at the break. Andrew Etzweier, Emanuel Perez, Tanner Blake, Justin Liebman and Kurt Helbing each found the net.

"We have 10 guys that don't get a whole lot of playing time from week to week so it was great to give them a chance to score and get some experience," said Riddell.

In the second half, Helbing recorded his second marker at the 45:56 mark, before Jason Krunnfusz and Kevin Vaness converted to put Mauston in the rearview for good.

Goalkeeper Eric Anderson put an end to six Mauston shots.

Baraboo (6-8-2, 2-2-1) will take to the pitch again on Tuesday in its Badger North Conference finale at Sauk Prairie.

Baraboo 3, Sauk Prairie 1

The BHS freshman soccer contingent picked up its sixth win of the year on Friday, taking down Sauk Prairie, 3-1.

It took some time for the T-Birds to get rolling, but after David McDonald's goal in the 38th minute, the squad hit its stride.

"At the beginning we weren't performing as well as we usually do," said BHS coach Heath Anderson. "Once we got closer to the half we started to move the ball and pass better. We took over from there and brought it all together to finish with a win."

Baraboo (6-3-2) returns to action on Monday against Mount Horeb.
