Monk’s Bar & Grill will open another location in fall 2014. This is the second Dane County franchised location for the 67 year-old business.
Ground breaking plans for Monk’s Bar & Grill in Sun Prairie are set for Wednesday, June 4, weather pending. The new Monk’s will feature a spacious dining room and bar area, as well as an outdoor dining area for guests to enjoy. The Sun Prairie Plan Commission approved the request Oct. 8, 2013, for the new 5,000+ sq. foot bar and grill.
Franchise owner, Greg Frankov, said this new Monk’s location will seat 170 people; 90 in new dining room, 80 in bar area and 45 outdoor. With hopes to be the East side’s premiere outdoor dining area, Frankov mentioned further plans to create a relaxing atmosphere overlooking a pond near the restaurant.
A tentative opening date has been set for September 2014, with this location then offering catering services within four to six months after the initial opening.
Monk’s Bar & Grill was started in 1947 by Helen and Gustave ‘Monk’ Heineke on Oak Street, just half a block from its current downtown location. It was purchased in 1982 by Tom and Jane Heller of Wisconsin Dells. The original classic location remains in downtown Wisconsin Dells.
They broadened the menu and seating in 1981. Then in 1999, the back half of the building was completely gutted and the second and third levels were added to create the bar as it is today.
In 1996, Tom Heller, Jeff Morris and Eric Meyer partnered together and opened a second Monk’s Bar and Grill, located on the square, downtown Baraboo. In 1998, Meyer bought out his two partners and has been the sole proprietor, and first licensed facility, ever since.
Monk’s Bar & Grill opened a third restaurant on the Wilderness Resort property in late 2006. Tom Heller, Dan Collar and Eric Meyer partnered together to open the largest Monk’s Bar & Grill restaurant to date and Monk’s at the Wilderness continues the “Original Monk’s” feel, but in a larger, even more sports-oriented atmosphere. The original menu was expanded to feature more burgers and sandwiches, plus pizza and vegetarian options. A lower level was created to house dinner theatre performances, live entertainment and serve as a large banquet facility with a cocktail lounge atmosphere. In the fall of 2010, Heller, Collar and Meyer opted for a redesign of Monk’s at the Wilderness’s lower level, and decided it was time to return it to a theme Monk’s was known for — Sports. Monk’s SportZone premiered in December 2010.
In January 2011, Monk’s Bar & Grill began a new chapter with franchising. With help from the original owner’s son, Jim Heineke, a location in Middleton was purchased for Monk’s first franchise opportunity. Tom Heller and Greg Frankov, who worked for Monk’s Bar & Grill for many years and served as general manager to the Wilderness restaurant from 2006 until late 2010, partnered together to open Monk’s Bar & Grill- Middleton in March 2011.
August 2013 was a turning point for Monk’s Bar & Grill as it became an official franchise system, recognized by the state of Wisconsin. Soon thereafter, franchisee Greg Frankov announced the official approval of Monk’s Bar & Grill’s newest location in Sun Prairie. The Madison-area addition is Frankov’s second Monk’s Bar & Grill and will feature a premiere outdoor dining area.
