Clerks in Columbus and Fall River are starting to prepare for the 2018 spring election.

In Columbus, City Clerk Megan Moen said three seats will be up for re-election April 4. Those seats are occupied by council members Regan Rule (District 1), Rod Melotte (District 2) and Andrew Traxler (District 3).

“The deadline for candidates to submit their nomination papers, declaration of candidacy, and campaign registration statement would normally be Tuesday, Jan. 2, however city hall will be closed that day to observe New Year’s so the deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3,” Moen said. “Notification of non-candidacy forms is due to us by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22. If an incumbent fails to notify us, three days are added to the Jan. 3 deadline for other candidates, but only in that (specific) district.”

In Fall River, village clerk Marie Abegglen said three board members are up for re-election: Judy Robbins, John Ninmann and Andy Schmiechen. Abegglen said candidates and incumbents do not have to file papers to be placed on the ballot.

“We hold a caucus for the nominations,” she said. “Our caucus is Jan. 10 at 6 p.m.”

Abegglen said she has not heard of any candidates interested in running for village board. She is also not aware of any incumbents wishing to step down and not run for re-election.
