Cooking Sorghum

Dennis Buchda explains sorghum processing to fest-goers in this photo from 2015. This year's Sorghum Fest will be held Saturday, Sept. 16 at Savanna Oaks Community Center.

Watch sorghum processing from field to jar at Sorghum Fest on the grounds of Savanna Oaks Community Center on the corner of Highway 16 and Savanna Road, across from the village of Fall River, on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The days activities begin with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast featuring potato and buttermilk pancakes, sausage, applesauce and beverage, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. inside the center.

Sorghum processing will be underway by 8 a.m. Enjoy the outdoor Farm/Flea/Fabulous Finds Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors are needed in all categories. Call the center at 920-484-6257 or Pam at 920-623-53419 for details.

The Badger Antique Auto Club will be displaying their treasured autos on the grounds. These autos have been finely restored to their original beauty and their owners take great pride in showing them off.

There’s always something special at Sorghum Fest for the kids. The Workshop in Columbus will be doing arts and crafts, Apple Annie the Clown will provide face painting, balloon twisting and a bubble show, and there will be bounce houses. The first 100 kids will receive a free treat bag! All kids activities are free, thanks to donations by local sponsors.

A tailgate-style lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. Lunch will feature brats, pulled pork, hot dogs, nachos and chips along with beverages. Don’t forget to try a nice cold sorghum beer. The Pie Booth will open at 10:30 a.m. with a tasty selection of homemade pies donated by local bakers! For your listening and dancing enjoyment, the Driftless Bluegrass Band will be performing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the big tent. Bucket raffle winners will be announced at 2 p.m.

Jars of Sorghum and Savanna Cookbooks will be available for purchase at the fest, and there will be calendar raffle tickets available for $20 each with 67 cash payouts October to December. Don’t forget to join in on the bucket raffles.

Admission and parking on fest grounds is free. The event will be held rain or shine. Come and enjoy this family-friendly event. For more information, call 920-484-6257 or or visit the Savanna Oaks Facebook page.
