The Reedsburg wrestling team had a respectable showing on Dec. 29 when the Beavers traveled to UW-Oshkosh to compete in the Lourdes OTW Wrestling Classic.

Two of Reedsburg’s wrestlers stood out from the rest, as Mason McMillen took third while Caden Fry took fourth to lead the Beavers to a 24th place finish out of 68 teams.

In the 126-pound bracket, McMillen received a bye before taking on Monona Grove/McFarland’s Katelynn Gunderson where he won 17-1 by tech fall. McMillen followed with an 8-2 decision over Chilton/Hilbert’s Maverik Ott, and went on to defeat Bonduel’s Jordan Boldt by a 16-7 major decision in the quarterfinal.

In the semis, McMillen had a close match against Ashwaubenon’s Fernando Coronado but fell 10-7. McMillen bounced back in the consolation semifinal with an 18-4 major decision win over Campbellsport’s Cade Heisdorf, and capped things off with a 4-3 decision over Antigo’s Benjamin Stimac in the third place match.

Fry meanwhile, went 5-2 in the 132-pound bracket to take fourth. After a bye, Fry pinned Watertown’s Julian Ruiz (3:31) before taking down Belleville’s Max Gerner by a 4-1 decision. Fry kept things going in the quarterfinal with a 9-2 decision over Wabeno-Laona’s Brendon Dorner, but fell by Andrew High School’s Luke Gardner in the semifinal by a 5-2 decision. Fry placed himself in the third place match after defeating Princeton’s Connor Richter by a 4-3 decision, but fell in a close 1-0 decision to Fond du Lac’s Isaac Ortegon in the third place match.

The other top finisher for Reedsburg included Brady Fry, who took 12th place in the 170 after going 4-4. The Beavers will be back on the mat on Jan. 9 when they host DeForest for a Badger North Conference duel.
