REEDSBURG — Foul trouble spelled doom for the Lodi girls basketball team Friday afternoon.

The Blue Devils committed 25 fouls and had three players foul out en route to a 66-48 loss to host Reedsburg in a non-conference game.

“We got in a lot of foul trouble,” Lodi coach Michelle Puls said. “We don’t have a large bench, so we need to stay in the game. That kind of made us do a lot of changes and switches and things that kind of got us out of our game. We couldn’t play our physical-type pressing defense because we were just in too much foul trouble.”

The struggles hit the Blue Devils throughout the first half, as they put the Beavers at the foul line 18 times. Reedsburg took advantage, shooting 10-of-18 from the charity stripe and forced the Blue Devils to use a different playing style. Reedsburg senior Brooklyn Schyvinck started out hot, scoring multiple buckets under the rim to give the Beavers a 10-3 lead.

Lodi junior Alana Gilles scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the first half, sprouting a small comeback as the Blue Devils cut their deficit to five at 19-14 before Reedsburg took a 29-22 lead into the break.

“She’s our go-to obviously, and teams are figuring that out, but I’m very proud of the way our freshman guards have stepped up in the last couple games,” Puls said. “They are starting to score more so that’s really nice to see.”

Skyler Miller scored for Reedsburg to open the second half before the Blue Devils went on a 7-2 run to pull back within five. Reedsburg countered with a 10-0 run to take a 44-29 lead and never looked back. The Beavers extended their lead to as much as 20.

“I thought we played really well today,” Reedsburg coach Mark Simon said. “We got a lot of contributions from players that do the little things for us. Skyler Miller, Alyssa Straka and Rachel Schmitt, I think those three did a lot of the little things for us: got some rebounds, played good defense, were in the right spots and really contributed to the win.”

Puls, meanwhile, was happy with her team’s effort.

“Reedsburg is a very good team. Let’s give credit to where credit is due,” she said. “We knew that this would be a test for us to see where we are right now. I told the girls I can’t take away from their effort because they played to the bitter end.

“These are the types of teams we want to play in non-conference. Not the types of teams we’re going to beat by 20. We’re going to learn from this and it will make us more competitive in conference play.”

The Blue Devils will travel to Lakeside Lutheran next Thursday for a Capitol North Conference game.
