Operation procrastination

With one false start after another, it was starting to look like the Class of 2009's migration would never get off ground.

Operation Migration, based in Necedah, raises and trains a flock of endangered whooping cranes to follow ultralight aircrafts on a yearly migration.

The crew of pilots and scientists wear uncomfortable spacesuit-like costumes and keep the cranes in total isolation from humans in order to prevent them from getting accustomed to humans.

Operation Migration had slated Oct. 10 as their initial departure date for this year's flock, only to have it pushed back by wind, snow and rain.
