Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson defended himself last week in blistering cross examination by an attorney determined to show he is inconsistent in his application of department policies and performed a biased investigation of her client — suspended Lieutenant Jeremy Haske.
"Look, I sent this out for fair and impartial investigation," Oleson said. "For me to take an investigation from another agency and now take it into a direction I now think it should go would be completely inappropriate."
Oleson was responding to a question from Shawn Mutter, Haske's attorney, who argued that Oleson did not refer criminal charges against Haske to the county district attorney's office in 2008 after the state Department of Criminal Investigation dropped its investigation of alleged sexual misconduct against Haske because Oleson had reason to believe that the allegation that Haske had sex with a 17-year-old girl was untrue. But Oleson put the charge in his complaint against Haske anyway, Mutter argued, because he hoped to terminate Haske before he could oppose Oleson for the elected post of sheriff.
