The Juneau County Board of Supervisors will need to chop $298,000 from the county's proposed 2010 spending following a public hearing on the new budget Tuesday.

"The Finance Committee had a very tough job this year because of the state budget limit constraints …," Finance Director Lori Chipman told the board.

The proposed 2010 budget is $10,981,697—a little more than $598,000, or 5.8 percent, over the proposed 2009 budget. The county's fiscal year is the same as the calendar year, so final 2009 spending won't be known for a few months.

The proposed 2010 budget is $298,007 over the levy limit set by the state, which limits counties to levy increases of 3 percent unless the amount over 3 percent comes from new construction. Juneau County's new construction added just 1.1 percent to its levy.

The proposed 2010 Juneau County mil rate is $5.234. The millage rate, commonly abbreviated "mil rate," is the amount per $1,000 used to calculate taxes on a property.
