Hazel Howland
Hazel Howland, 89, Mauston, Wis., died on Nov. 3, 2009, in Mauston after a short illness. Hazel was born the youngest of seven children on Jan. 27, 1920, to Ole and Helen (Jensen) Johnson. She was raised by her father and extended family as her mother died when Hazel was very young.
On Nov. 13, 1937, she married Fred Howland. The couple lived for a short time in Waukesha while Fred was in the service, after which they moved to Mauston. They lived in a tent while they built their family home on Highway 12/16. This home is where they would raise their nine daughters and live for many decades.
Hazel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 72 years. Hazel loved to hunt and fish and be outdoors. She always had four simple goals for her girls, goals that spoke to her values and character. They were: be confirmed in the church, graduate high school, learn to
swim and learn to drive. Her daughters didn't
disappoint.
Hazel is survived by her daughters, Betty Carr of Mauston, Donna (Harvey) Hammond of Mequon, Bonnie (Russell) La Marche of Grand Marsh, Marlene Southworth of Mauston, Darlene (Richard) Skalak of Mauston, Linda (Gerald) Carr of New Lisbon, Fritzi (Allen) Jessen of Camp Douglas and Kathy Howland of Mauston; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; daughter, Margie; son, Bert; and siblings, Barney, Otto, Herman, Jake, Bessie and Hilda.
