Artists in the Mauston area will have a chance to showcase their talent and support a local studio during the second annual Art the Park event Aug. 12.

The event, held at Riverside Park in Mauston, will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and funds raised will help support Artistic Expressions in downtown Mauston.

Billie Jo Scharfenberg, director of Artistic Expressions, said the highlight of the fundraiser will be a sidewalk chalk contest. Chalk will be provided or artists can bring their own and can purchase a square for $10. Prizes for the best sidewalk art will be handed out to first, second and third place winners. The top prize will be a three-month membership to Anytime Fitness.

Games, vendors and raffle baskets will also be available. Live entertainment will be provided by Generations Dance Academy and a DJ will be playing cowboy tunes from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Pizza will be served by Hearthside Chariot of New Lisbon.

Scharfenberg said Art the Park is an important fundraiser for Artistic Expressions. The studio hosts classes and fun events for children and adults through the year.

“We bring the idea of creativity and that it’s OK to be creative and there are other options in the world besides hanging out in the street,” Scharfenberg said. “Artistic Expressions gives people those options.”

Money raised at the event also goes toward supplies and building costs. Scharfenberg said the studio tries to keep class fees low so families can afford the programs.

“We offer space for parents to come and interact with their kids,” Scharfenberg said.

Art can also be a suitable stress reliever and a creative outlet for people to tap into.

“This is a safe place for people to express their talents without being criticized or judged,” Scharfenberg said.
