An Elroy man pleaded no contest in Juneau County Circuit Court Thursday to one charge of second degree sexual assault of a child.
Jaime Santoyo, 28, was charged last June for an incident with a 14-year-old girl at his trailer in the town of Lindina April 16.
According to the criminal complaint, the girl reported the crime June 3 to the Mauston Police Department. She told an investigator from the Juneau County Sheriff's Department the same day that Santoyo had coerced her into sexual intercourse at his trailer after taking her and her friend there.
Santoyo acknowledged having sex with the girl in an interview with a Sheriff's Department investigator June 16, according to the complaint.
Santoyo, who speaks Spanish but not English, participated in Thursday's court session with the aid of an interpreter.
District Attorney Scott Southworth said the plea deal he negotiated with Tom Steinman, Santoyo's attorney, caps his recommended sentence at whatever sentence the presentence investigator assigned by the state to the case recommends.
The crime carries a maximum sentence of
40 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
Judge Paul Curran scheduled sentencing for Oct. 21.
