Early-season games can often lead to error-prone performances. Such was the case for the Necedah Cardinals in their season-opening loss to Brookwood.
The Cardinals (0-1) put up seven errors on its way to an 11-3 loss to the Falcons (0-1) Tuesday, April 10 in Necedah. After enduring several weeks on postponements and cancellations due to poor weather, it marked the first conference game of the season for any of the Scenic Bluffs teams.
For the Falcons, senior Connor Schueller went 3 for 3 with a walk and three runs, Ben DeWitt went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, Mitchell Klinkler went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Lukas Summerfield went 2 for 4 with a triple and scored a couple runs and Bucky Dwyer went 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI.
As a team, Brookwood finished with 11 hits, six walks and four strikeouts. The Falcons scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. On the mound, DeWitt went five innings, gave up three runs, surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out three.
For Necedah, Gabe Slye went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Trenton Whipple went 1 for 1 with a pair of runs scored, Jaron Murphy went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Isaiah Herried went 1 for 2 at the plate. Miles Saylor was the Cardinals’ starting pitcher, going three innings and giving up eight hits, nine runs (only three earned) and three walks while striking out two. Whipple came on in relief, going two innings while giving up two runs, three hits, and three walks and notching a pair of strikeouts.
The Cardinals will look to pick up their first win of the year when they return to action against Hillsboro (1-0) Thursday, April 12 at 5:00 p.m. in Necedah.
