JUNEAU – A 45-year-old former inmate at Fox Lake Correctional Institution was sentenced Monday to 80 days in jail after being found guilty of leaving Waupun State Farm in October 2011 to go to a gas station and purchase tobacco and other items.

Kevin D. May was found guilty of escaping criminal arrest after pleading guilty. The sentence is set to commence on or before Dec. 27.

The complaint states that May told detectives another inmate had given him $20 to purchase tobacco and tobacco smoking products. He said he felt pressure from other inmates to do it. May told detectives that he was reluctant to do it, but he didn’t want to be an outsider or an outcast and he wanted to get along with the people he worked with on the farm.

According to the complaint, May said the other inmate told him he could have some of the tobacco in return for going to the gas station. May said he never delivered the tobacco, instead throwing it in a bale of hay.

May must also pay $268 in fines and court costs.
