More than $42,000 was raised in 4½ weeks through the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign in Beaver Dam, according to campaign co-chairs Rhonda Steiner and Jack Hankes.

The campaign features a variety of fundraising efforts, but centers around people ringing bells at store entrances with a red kettle to accept donations from passersby. It is organized each year by the Beaver Dam Noon Kiwanis.

According to the Salvation Army website, almost 90 percent of the money raised stays in the community. Funds are used for emergency vouchers for rent, food, utilities, health care and transportation.

For the ninth year, Joanne Tyjeski and Karl Nienhuis organized a Red Kettle Concert, this year raising a record $5,800 from donors who attended.

Hundreds of volunteer bell ringers from 22 businesses, civic groups and church groups participated in the local effort. In addition, about three dozen area businesses kept counter kettles.

The 2015 campaign raised $41,000 and the 2016 campaign raised $35,500.
