TOWN OF EXCELSIOR — A 38-year-old Reedsburg man was flown to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Wednesday after the car he was driving collided with a semitrailer on state Highway 33.

A preliminary investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department showed that Kenneth Wilk of Reedsburg was westbound on Hwy. 33 in a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier when he crossed over the center line and hit an eastbound semtrailer owned by Tax-Air Freight of Milwaukee.

Randall Kreger, 42, of Sun Prairie, was driving the semi-tractor trailer.

Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister said Hwy. 33 was closed for 2 1/2 hours while sheriff’s deputies, Reedsburg Fire Department and Reedsburg Area Ambulance crews tended to the crash.

Wilk and two young passengers had to be extracted from their vehicle by firefighters using the Jaws of Life tool. The two young passengers were taken by Reedsburg Area Ambulance to Reedsburg Area Medical Center for treatment. Wilk was flown to UW Hospital, where his condition was unknown.

Kreger was treated and released at the scene.

Meister said the crash remains under investigation by his department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

“Right now, we are at the very preliminary stages of the investigation,” Meister said. “We do know charges are pending.”

He said the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the crash by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Sauk County Highway Department.
