Catherine A. “Kate” Barreau, 89, of Richland Center, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at Schmitt Woodland Hills.

She was born April 13, 1928, in Rockbridge Township, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Graeber) Ryan. She attended the Richland County Normal and taught at the one-room school in Melancthon Creek. Kate was married on Nov. 21, 1949, to Donald L. Barreau Sr. and farmed by his side for many years. She was a member of St. Mary the Assumption Catholic Church in Richland Center. It was important to Kate for her children to attend Sunday Mass, catholic school and religious education classes. She nurtured her seven children and many grandchildren, with a love for learning she had many nights sitting around the kitchen table teaching them. She was an active 4-H and project leader and volunteered at St. Mary’s School listening to students read or helping them in the library. She loved to play euchre, garden, cook, can, preserve and sew. She also had a love for music and made sure all of her children played instruments and attended music lessons on Saturdays in Richland Center. She taught her children how to cook, clean and work hard. Kate took great pride in cooking a “scratch meal,” having a beautiful garden, flowers and a clean home.

Survivors include her seven children, Kathy (Wayne) Sharp of Montello, Patty (Tom) Templin of Wisconsin Dells, Linda (Frank) Cannon of Rockbridge, Diana (Allan) Heffner of Rockbridge, Donald Jr. (Lynn) Barreau of Rockbridge, Christy (Kent) Adsit of Richland Center, John Barreau of Rockbridge; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
