The Associated Press collected data on FEMA’s Public Assistance program, which provide an important lifeline for state and local government entities and nonprofits.

The AP collected data on all of FEMA's Major Disasters and Emergency Declarations declared from August 1998 to the present. The data covers the expenses for more than 657,000 individual projects in all states and U.S. territories. It also covers all types of disasters, from earthquakes to hurricanes to winter snowstorms.
This data does NOT include money FEMA paid to private individuals under its individual assistance program. It is only public assistance money for government and nonprofit entities to do specific recovery and disaster cleanup work.
