What will become of old depot?

The old Soo Line depot, located just off Superior Street in Portage, has seen better days. But, if some local boosters have their way, the depot could experience a renaissance -- restored to useful life in Portage. Old depot

There's no denying that Portage's old Soo Line Depot has seen better days.

Several local people hope, however, that the century-old structure's "better days" might also lie ahead.

 Emily at party

Emily Miller made it to double digits Friday, and for once, the number had nothing to do with lab results. Emily turned 10 years old after a bone marrow transplant, and fighting through three types of cancer for the majority of her life.

Burial mounds stop future development on site of Academy Building

ENDEAVOR - The discovery of Native American burial mounds will stop future development on a hill home to the old Academy Building that is owned by the village.

A group of representatives from the Ho-Chunk Nation performed an archaeology study of the hill recently, finding three Native American burial mounds. The discovery brings the total number of burials on the 15-acre property to four. A turtle mound was found in the same area during a similar archaeology study in May.

PACKERS: Late game letdown

GREEN BAY - DeAngelo Williams scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining, giving the Carolina Panthers a stunning come-from-behind 35-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers in wintry conditions at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The Packers appeared headed for a comeback victory of their own after breaking a 28-28 tie on Mason Crosby's 19-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining. But Green Bay immediately gave up a 45-yard kickoff return to Mark Jones and a 54-yard heave from Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith to set up first-and-goal on the Green Bay 1.

HENTOFF COLUMN: Darfur genocide is still going on

Of all the world's dictators, Sudan's Gen. Omar Al-Bashir is the most unfailingly duplicitous and murderously arrogant. His government was one of the first to welcome our new president with the hope that the slogan of President-elect Barack Obama - "change" - "would (bring) some real change between Sudan and the United States."

Obama knows better. As the Paris-based Sudan Tribune Web site reports: "During his campaign, Senator Obama pledged ‘unstinting resolve' to end the crisis in Darfur, and stated ‘there can be no doubt that the Sudanese government is chiefly responsible for the violence and is able to end it.'"
