Major bust nets thousands in pot; Authorities say men caught carrying trash bags full of marijuana; operation has been going on for decade in southern part of county
Several nights of nearly around-the-clock surveillance by Columbia County Sheriff's Department deputies paid off Wednesday, when four people were arrested in connection with what Detective Lt. Roger Brandner called "the biggest drug case we have had in a number of years."
Deputies recovered 75 marijuana plants in various stages of maturity, amounting to about 15 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $1,200 to $1,500 per pound - a total of $18,000 to $22,500.

TOWN OF HARRIS - Donna L. Ross, 74, of the Town of Harris, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Divine Savior Hospital, Portage. She was born Sept. 17, 1934, in Wheatfield, Ind., daughter of the late Frank and Dorthea Odell Meyers. Donna married Robert R. Ross on Sept. 25, 1954, in Chicago, Ill. She enjoyed sewing and making angels.

HENTOFF COLUMN: Exploring McCain’s torture view
During the widely seen and analyzed premier presidential debate, Barack Obama was grossly mistaken when, toward the end, he said: "I give Senator McCain great credit on the torture issue, for having identified that as something that undermines our long-term security - because of those things, we, I think, are going to have a lot of work to do in the next administration to restore that sense that America is that shining beacon on a hill." Our torture has shamed us.
In fact, although McCain in the past has spoken eloquently against torture during interrogations of terrorism suspects, his actual votes in Congress tell a different, shameful story.
