BOYS GOLF: Warriors keep rolling
By Travis Houslet
If Portage's four-match winning streak in conference dual meets wasn't enough evidence that the Warrior golf squad is coming on strong, Wednesday's showing at the Princeton Invitational at the Lawsonia Golf Club should do the trick.
Portage junior Lee Swan shot an even-par 72 to take top individual honors. Swan also teamed up with Brian Hart, who carded an 89, to take home top two-man team honors with a combined score of 161.
The low score for Swan continues a trend of impressive golf in recent weeks.
"Lee is really starting to dial it in. He is swinging on plain with tremendous balance, tempo and power," said Portage golf coach Ed Carlson. "It is really noticeable in the driver. The ball is jumping off the clubface and with his distance and accuracy it is setting up more birdie opportunities for him."
Portage's other two-man team was the brother combination of Travis and Mitch Seubert. Travis shot a 91, while Mitch carded a 10-over 82 for a combined score of 173.
"Mitch had another good outing for us. He continues to work hard and improve his skills. I am impressed by the way he is grinding out there saving any stroke he can," Carlson said.
"This was a nice showing for us on a pretty challenging day to play golf. The wind was blowing strong and it was quite gusty, which really puts a premium on club selection and shot-making. It was important to play smart and make aggressive swings to conservative targets."
Next up for Portage is the Badger Conference Meet on Wednesday in Spring Green.
