BOYS TENNIS: Warriors drop Baraboo

In a match that started on Tuesday before being suspended by rain, the Portage boys tennis team picked up one of its biggest wins of the season with a 4-3 win over Baraboo on Thursday night in Portage.

Portage got just one singles victory, and that came at No. 1 singles, as Chris Zimmerman picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Baraboo's Kris Kruse.

The Warriors clinched the victory over the Thunderbirds with some outstanding play from its doubles teams, which swept all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Mike Bain and Nate Fredrick lost the first set 6-1, but bounced back to win the next two sets, including a 7-3 victory in a second set tie-breaker.

At No. 2 doubles, the team of Joe Marcouiller and Matt Rohrbeck also lost the first set, but won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Just like the other two doubles teams for Portage, the No. 3 team of Mark Gutierrez and Nate Mael needed three sets to secure a victory, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

"This is a huge win for a our boys team. I don't think they've beat Baraboo in a long time," said Portage head coach Sarah Schultz. "I don't know if the doubles teams just came back and kicked it into gear, or what happened, but it was awesome tennis. It was a lot of good tennis."

The Warriors move to 2-1 in Badger North Conference dual meets and will travel to play at Sauk Prairie today before heading to Madison for the Badger Conference Tournament next weekend.

"With the way the boys played today, I am hoping that we can continue on to next Friday with the Badger Conference Tournament," Schultz said.
