BOYS TENNIS: Warriors wrap up at conference meet

By Kevin Morales

Three of four Portage singles players moved on to the second round but the Warriors failed to make it to day two of the Badger Conference Tournament Thursday and Friday at the Nielsen Tennis Center on the UW campus in Madison.

Chris Zimmerman, John Loomans and Jake Barreau each moved on to the second round. The Warriors No. 3 doubles team of Jordan Moan and Tom Tetzlaff moved up from JV No. 1 doubles team right before the meet and made a good first impression by earning a first-round win.

"I was glad that we were able to go on to those second games because we typically don't," Portage coach Sarah Schultz said. "It was really good."

Moan and Tetzlaff were called up to play in the conference tournament just minutes before the meet began as Schultz learned No. 3 singles player Trevor Bonham would not be able to play due to an arm injury.

"For Jordan and Tom that's a huge accomplishment," Schultz said.

That led to Mark Gutierrez playing at No. 3 singles.

The Warriors return to action Monday as they host a WIAA Division 2 subsectional. Kewaskum, Ripon, St. Johns Northwestern, St. Mary's Springs, University Lake School, Watertwon Luther Prep and Wayland Academy are the other schools at the subsectional.
