TRACK AND FIELD: Warriors finish strong
By Travis Houslet, Daily Register
Portage boys end their dual-meet season with a win and a tie.
The Portage boys track and field team finished the Badger North Conference dual meet season on a positive note. After going 0-4 to start the spring, the Warriors tied Mount Horeb 73-all and topped Sauk Prairie 84-61 on Tuesday at Bob Mael Field.
While the Warriors won't be a threat to win the overall conference title with an overall dual meet record of 1-4-1, Portage coach Brad Meixner is confident that his squad can make some noise at next week's Badger North meet in Mount Horeb.
"We can't win the conference championship overall, but there is nothing to say that we can't, as a boys team, win that conference meet," Meixner said. "When we all get together, everybody has something, somewhere, and you just never know.
"I seriously think we can win that conference meet and that would be a huge lift for us going into regionals."
The Portage boys won three events on Tuesday, including the shot put, where junior Jake Hohlstein took top honors with a distance of 47-feet, 8-inches. The Warriors actually swept the top three spots in the shot put, as Darrell Anderson was second at 44-9 1/2, and Kevin Berger was third at 43-1 1/2.
Another bright spot for the Warriors came in the high jump, where Alex Thomas won the event by clearing 6-2. Finishing third at 5-10 was Kyle Roche.
As has been the case for much of the season, Portage senior Tony Ryan won the 100 meters and was a member of winning 400 and 800 meter relay teams. Ryan won the 100 meters with a time of 10.90 seconds and joined teammates Ben Hartman, J.J. Robinson and Thomas to win the 400 relay (44.16 seconds) and the 800 relay (1:34.29).
The Portage girls, who are down to just 18 athletes, finished a winless conference dual season with a 119-23 loss to Sauk Prairie and a 81-61 loss to Mount Horeb.
Some of the top performances from the lady Warriors included Leah Smith in the shot put (second place, 30-6), Jensena Paul in the 300 meter hurdles (second, 56.04) and Kassie Vaness in the 1600 meters (second, 5:42.9).
The Portage track teams will now get ready to compete in the Wisconsin Dells Invite on Friday before traveling to Mount Horeb for the Badger North Conference meet on Tuesday.
