It was a difficult night for the Portage girls swim team as the Warriors fell 97-73 to host Beaver Dam in a Badger North Conference dual meet on Tuesday night.

Coming off a record-breaking meet last week, Brooklyn Miller led the way for Portage vs. the Golden Beavers as the sophomore speedster won a pair of individual events. Miller opened her night by winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 1.40 seconds, narrowly edging out Beaver Dam’s Morgan McGauley (1:01.45).

Miller added a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.49, beating out junior teammate Rakelle Schultz (1:08.65), who also took third in the 100 freestyle.

The duo of Miller and Schultz helped the Warriors get off to a strong start. The pair teamed with sophomore Leigha Andraschko and senior Allison Veglahn to win the opening 200 medley relay in 2:04.69.

Portage’s quick advantage was short-lived, however, as Beaver Dam swept the 200 freestyle and took first in both the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle for a 36-26 lead at the break. The Beavers built on their lead out of the intermission, going 1-2 in the 500 free before winning the 200 freestyle relay for a 72-52 lead to put things away with three events remaining.

The Warriors also got strong swims from freshman Rubie Kohn in the 100 butterfly (second, 1:16.59) and Andraschko and Veglahn, who went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. The team of Schultz, Veglahn, Maddi Routson and Miller took second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Portage’s next competition is Tuesday when it travels to Lodi.
