As a Columbia County Highway Department crew works to repair a buckle across the southbound lanes of Interstate 39 just north of Portage, officers from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol divert traffic to the shoulder. Temperatures around 95 degrees Tuesday afternoon caused the pavement to buckle. A buckle occurs when heat causes the pavement to expand and move; it buckles when its movement is blocked. Work went from about 3:45 to 5:45 p.m.
