TOWN OF DELTON — A Portage man was arrested and taken to the Sauk County jail Sunday afternoon for what police say was his fifth drunk driving offense.

A deputy who stopped John D. Angell, 48, for an equipment violation in the Town of Delton around 3 p.m. noticed the smell of intoxicants in his vehicle, according to a news release from the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department.

Angell was driving at the time with another adult in the vehicle.

“The deputy suspected the driver was under the influence of intoxicants and asked him to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed,” said Sheriff Chip Meister.

Angell was arrested, issued a warning for the equipment violation, and taken to the Sauk County jail. Meister said the man has four prior violations for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
