Portage police are looking for two armed suspects following a midday robbery at Bank Mutual of Portage.
Police received a report at 12:49 p.m. Wednesday of a robbery at 145 East Cook St., where two masked gunmen allegedly entered the bank and demanded money. After being given an unspecified amount of money, the suspects fled in a white four-door sedan.
Officers are looking for the two suspects with assistance from the department’s K-9 unit and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to county authorities, the Portage police are being aided by federal authorities through the FBI’s Madison field office.
The bank is next door to Gorsuch Insurance, across from Wilz Drug on East Cook Street and across from Marachoswki Place at the Portage Center for the Arts. Neighbors only noticed something out of the ordinary after the fact as police converged on the scene and then canvassed the neighborhood.
Later in the afternoon, the bank posted a sign saying “Sorry, we are temporarily closed,” referring customers to the company’s Beaver Dam branch. Police vehicles continued to be highly visible patrolling the area.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the Portage Police Department at 608-742-2174, or Columbia County Crime Stoppers at 800-293-8477.
