Motorists taking Interstate 39 to go "up north" will have to deal with about 10 weeks of single-lane traffic from now through May 24, as crews work on bridges and median barriers.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the four-mile construction zone is from Highway 33 to Highway 51 in Columbia County.
The single lane setup will be on both sides of the highway, so traffic delays could happen during peak travel times.
Following the initial construction work and single-lane traffic, the road will reopen to four lanes (two in each direction), with periodic single lane closures on weekdays in the summer.
The $4.2 million project includes improvements to bridge structures, installation of median barrier guards and interchange modifications on the northbound exit ramp to Highway 16.
The project is expected to be completed by November.
Motorists can check on travel conditions by calling 511 or going online to the state highway travel map.
