Each year, a Columbia County Wisconsin Wins team, consisting of an adult supervisor and youth, conduct tobacco/nicotine compliance checks at local businesses. They record whether or not the underage youth are able to purchase these products from the retailers. The purpose of these inspections are to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco/nicotine products to youth.

Our Wisconsin Wins team visited a sample of Portage tobacco/nicotine retailers earlier this year, and all upheld the law and refused the sale of tobacco/nicotine to our underage youth. A special acknowledgement of the following Portage retailers should be made for their commitment to keep our youth tobacco/nicotine-free and following the law:

Petro Travel Plaza, Interstate BP (Highway 78), Jot’s Food Mart (Highway 33), Jim’s BP (W. Wisconsin St.), Ideal Vapor, Fort BP (Highway 33), Market Basket (DeWitt St.), Discount Smokes, Discount Liquor, Kwik Trip #653 (E. Wisconsin St.), and Portage One Stop (Crawford Road).

Tobacco/nicotine retailers, along with parents and our local community, must work to keep tobacco/nicotine products out of the hands of kids. Next time you see your local retailer check an ID, say “Thank you” for helping keep our youth healthy.
