Sunrise over city

Regularly waking up before the crack of dawn, bakers, farm workers and baristas are among the earliest risers. These people wake up early and get the day going for the rest of us. Without a cuppa joe and morning muffin, the later-rising masses might rise, well, even later.

According to a FiveThirtyEight analysis of American Community Survey data, most people get to work between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The average work day start time often tends to be a reflection of a city's predominant businesses and demographics. For example, there's one other type of job that reliably sees early mornings: military professionals. As we'll see near the top of the list, several of America's early rising towns are home to military bases or barracks.

Conversely, in New York City and California's Silicon Valley, home to many young, tech professionals, the work day starts around 8:20 a.m. -- almost a half hour later than the U.S. average of 7:55 a.m. A late work day start time doesn't always mean more sleep, though. For many in large, metropolitan areas it simply means they have longer commutes.

If you're more of a morning person and want to live in an early rising city, FindTheHome has discovered the U.S. cities that wake up the earliest. We used data from the 2014 American Community Survey to find cities that have the highest percentage of people who wake up between midnight and 6 a.m. for work. Cities with populations of 15,000 people or higher are considered.

For the night-owls out there, you might want to avoid the cities on this list.
