The Reedsburg boys track and field team was eager to become conference champion on May 15 when the Beavers traveled to Sauk Prairie for the Badger North Conference Meet.

The Beavers knew they had a good chance at taking the title, especially after taking the title over conference foe Waunakee at the Viking Invite on May 4. While Reedsburg still came away with a solid score on May 15, the Beavers were edged by the Warriors by a 57-point margin to become conference runner-ups.

“To finish second in a meet of that caliber, with that quality of competition, it was a good night. Yeah I would have liked it to have been a little closer, but ultimately we finished second and that’s a good thing for Reedsburg track and field,” coach Phil Hasler said.

Waunakee stepped up its game, recording 164 points to take the title while Reedsburg recorded 107. DeForest took third (93), followed by Beaver Dam (79.5) and Baraboo (79).

As per usual, Reedsburg grabbed the majority of its points in the sprinting and hurdling events, but also saw some top finishes in field events as well. Luke Rapisarda was able to beat a talented field of sprinters in the 400 meter dash, becoming conference champ with a 50.2. The senior also saw a third place finish in the 200, finishing in 22.71 while Waunakee’s L.O. Johnson (22.59) and Riley Zuhde (22.67) took the first two spots. Jacob Dregney meanwhile, did his thing in the 110 meter hurdles, taking second in 15.47 behind Sauk Prairie’s James Bockhop (14.7). Senior Tobias Brown added a fifth place finish for Reedsburg in the event with a 15.97. Dregney was seeded to place near the top of the 300 hurdles, but had an unfortunate fall after jumping a bit early on a hurdle.

“We had cut the lead in the meet to eight points at one point and then my 300 hurdler Jacob Dregney who had the fastest time going in, just really stretched to get over the seventh hurdle and clipped it and fell,” Hasler said. “So we didn’t score points in that event and we counted on scoring ten or maybe eight.”

Other top individual finishers for Reedsburg in track events include Casey Campbell, who took fourth in the 100 with an 11.38, and Zeb Brown who took seventh in the 800 with a 2:08.93.

Hasler said Waunakee got the advantage in the sprints.

“They’re so loaded in the sprints,” he said. “They scored 47 points in the 100 and the 200 and I had one guy place so we had 11. So there’s the difference right there.”

The Beavers won two of the four relays, and took second in another. Wayde Ernstmeyer led off the 4x200, and worked with Riley Gunder, Victor Statz, and Campbell where the quartet showed crisp handoffs and took the title with a 1:33.71. Zeb Brown, Gunder, Dregney, and Rapisarda followed suit, taking the title in the 4x400 in 3:33.61. It was the third conference championship for Rapisarda in the event. Reedsburg was two seconds away from taking another crown in the 4x100, but took second place at Ethan Lee, Tobias Brown, Chase Kaiser and Campbell crossed the line in 45.85.

Senior Bryce Bierman led Reedsburg’s field events, setting a new personal best in the high jump after clearing the bar at six feet, two inches to become conference champ.

“The best story of the night was Bryce Bierman winning the high jump. Bryce is a good kid who’s had kind of an injury-plagued high school career,” Hasler said. “That jump he made at six-two, he would have been good at six-four or higher, it was perfect. And just to see the emotion in him and in his family, it was great.”

Sophomore Max Tully took fourth in the event (5-10). Senior Joe Lichte also set a new personal record in the shot put, recording a distance of 45 feet, eight and a half inches to take second place. Joe Statz took sixth in the event with a 42-06. Junior Nick Crary meanwhile, took third in the triple jump with a 41-01. Other top finishers included Rafael Rodriguez in the pole vault (fifth, 10-06) and Jon Schmitt in the discus (fourth, 129-03).

On the girls side, Reedsburg finished in fifth place with 69 points. Waunakee took the title (157.5), followed by Mount Horeb (127), Beaver Dam (101), and DeForest (85).

Senior Brooklyn Schyvinck dominated in her final high school conference meet. Schyvinck took the title in not just one or two, but four events on the day to lead the Beavers. She took first in the 100 (12.55), the 200 (25.62), the 400 (57.77), and the long jump (16-05 3/4).

Other top finishers included Danielle Peyer in the 100 (seventh, 13.68); Jenna McBride in the 400 (fifth, 1:04.73); Ashley Campbell in the 800 (eighth, 2:42.51); Annabelle Moon in the 1,600 (eighth, 6:03.51); Angela Gasser in the 3,200 (eighth, 13:02.88); Haley Asp, Skyler Miller, Peyer, and Rachel Schmitt in the 4x100 relay (fourth, 54.17); Miller in the high jump (third, 5-00); and Kaelyn Kurtenbach-Winch in the pole vault (fifth, 7-06).

The Reedsburg boys and girls will compete in a WIAA Div. 1 Regional Meet on May 21 at Baraboo High School.
