Merlin Herbert Benseman, 77, of Reedsburg, beloved husband of Maureen, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 10, 1940, in Washington Township, to the late Herbert and Hilda (Mente) Benseman. He enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1960. In January 1962, he was stationed at the nuclear missile base in Holy Loch Scotland. Shortly after that he met Maureen in Greenock Scotland, they were married there on July 3, 1964. Together the couple returned to Reedsburg in 1965.

Merlin was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reedsburg.

He was employed at the Richland Center Foundry for 25 years. He was an avid Packer, Badger, and Brewer fan, and he loved to play basketball with his sons in his younger days. Merlin always had a crossword puzzle book in his hands, and would do them for hours.

In their 53 years of marriage, Merlin and Maureen made many trips to Scotland returning to where it all began.

In addition to his wife Maureen, he is survived by his four sons, Mark, Jeff and Sean Benseman, all of Reedsburg, and Jason (Douglas Stanevich) Benseman of Madison; and his brother Wayne Benseman of Janesville; his in-laws, George (Jane) Gash, Margaret Watters, and Raymond Gash, all of Greenock Scotland; and his loving nieces, Elizabeth, Fiona and Nichola; and his nephew Steven.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law Ronald (Margaret) Nash; in-laws, Sharon Benseman, Patty Benseman, Ronald and Ann Gash, and Eric Watters of Scotland.

Funeral services for Merlin will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reedsburg. Rev. David Glesne, pastor, will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg. Burial will follow services at St. John Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.
