REEDSBURG — Fourth District Alder Russ Ziegler said goodbye to the Common Council at the conclusion of their Oct. 26 meeting.
Ziegler announced at the end of September that he bought a house in another district and would no longer be able to serve in his current seat.
"It's a bitter-sweet moment," he said.
Ziegler thanked everyone in fourth district for their support, the entire Reedsburg community, fellow alders and the six people who turned in papers to replace him. He added that it was a good sign that so many people were eager to become more involved in the community.
Council members said they hoped he would return to the horseshoe in city hall. Some even expect him to.
"I've got a strange feeling this won't be the last time we'll see you here," Alder Dave Estes said.
For now, the council will have to do without Ziegler. In his place, six residents have stepped forward to serve alongside Jim Heuer as a fourth district alderperson.
CareeAn Fuhlbohm, Troy Garwood, Sarah Hill, Dave Knudsen, Richard Knuth and Jim Schernecker all turned in council papers before the Oct. 16 deadline.
Hill served as the at-large alder for a one-year term before being defeated by Brandt Werner, who currently serves in that seat. Schernecker was defeated by Jim Heuer in April in a close election. Fuhlbohm currently serves on the city's ordinance committee, and Knudsen is on the city's board of review.
Heuer, who will team up with Werner to make a recommendation to council, said they hope to conduct interviews of all six candidates this week.
