REEDSBURG — Aldo Leopold. The 400 Trail. Devil's Lake State Park.
Sauk County boasts the renowned conservationist, top-rated biking and snowmobiling trail and one of the best places in the state to get in a tough hike or climb. So why does it rank in the middle of the state when it comes to parks and recreation on public land?
Public land consists of anything owned by the federal, state or county government and much of it is used for parks and wildlife reserves in Wisconsin. Sauk County ranks a mediocre 34 out of 72 counties in the state with 31,172 publicly owned acres, according to research conducted by The Wisconsin Taxpayer Alliance (WISTAX).
