Margaret J. Matko, 88 , Published October 21, 2009
Margaret J. Matko, 88 of West Bend and formerly of Darlington, died on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at The Kathy Hospice in West Bend. She was born on Feb. 4, 1921, to William and Margaret (Long) McGowan. Margaret graduated from Darlington High School in 1939. She was married on Jan. 23, 1943, in Milwaukee to Mathias "Matt" Matko.
They raised horses and dogs in Mukwanago and Rock Springs for many years. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee, New Berlin Memorial Hospital and Sauk County Health Care where she retired from.
Survivors include her husband, Matt; daughters, Patricia Halloran of Reedsburg, Jane Matko of West Bend and Mary (Larry) Batterman of West Bend; 10 grandchildren, Kim (Ret. Major Allen) Fry, Gus Straub, Thomas (Suzanne) Straub, Margaret Straub, Ann Straub, Timothy (Shannon) Straub, Elizabeth Straub, William Batterman, Matthew Batterman and Larry Batterman, Jr; 11 grandchildren, Colin, Zachary, Asher, Alannan, Moira, Aidan, Kiernan, Brendan, Therese and Abigeal Fry and Carissa Straub; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mary "Tootsie" McGowan and Catherine Lucille Grube.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 104 E. Harriet St., Darlington, with Fr. Monte Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Church.
