Elna Mae Bates, 89 of Reedsburg, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at the Sauk County Health Care Center. She was born on Nov. 7, 1920, in Hillsboro, the youngest of five children, to Worth and Gladys (Kauffman) Baley. She attended Hillsboro schools, graduating in 1938. On Sept. 27, 1940, Elna married Walter Joseph Bates of Wonewoc. They settled in Reedsburg where Joe, with Elna's assistance, later built their family home on Booster Boulevard. A dedicated wife and mother, Elna was an adept homemaker, excellent cook and baker, superior seamstress, gardener and helped raise several litters of Weimareiner pups. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. Elna did home permanents for many lady friends. For six decades family
