Miners drill Silver Eagles

The Shullsburg Miners scored 27 second quarter points and rolled to a 48-13 win over Weston Friday night at Weston.
The Miners broke open a 7-6 game and improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Silver Eagles fell to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the Ridge & Valley Conference. Weston started with a bang as the Silver Eagles grabbed a 6-0 lead when David Klang hauled in a five yard touchdown pass from Caleb Arneson, but the Miners went up 7-6 on a 17 yard run by Colton Laird to give Shullsburg a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Shullsburg passing game then kicked in as quarterback Brooks Lutes hit Jacob Holland with a 65 yard strike to put the Miners up 14-6. The Miners extended their lead to 21-6 when Laird rumbled in from 28 yards out, and Lutes then hit Nick Doyle with a 40 yard strike to put the Silver Eagles in a big hole at 27-6. Holland then hauled in a 34 yard pass from Lutes for a 34-6 halftime lead.
The Miners added two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Dylan Gile broke a 23 yard run for a score and Nate Carrier finished the scoring with a five yard dive that gave Shullsburg a 48-6 lead. Jacob Quade scored from five yards out for Weston to make the final 48-13.
The Shullsburg offense racked up 458 yards on just 30 plays, as Colton Laird rushed for 93 yards on eight carries, and Trevor Milestone added 84 yards on just five carries for a 16.8 yard per carry average. Miners quarterback Brooks Lutes completed seven passes for 210 yards with Jacob Holland catching three of them for a gaudy 124 yards, or 41.3 yards per catch.
Weston's David Klang had three catches for 31 yards and Jason Mcglynn rushed 18 times for 61 yards in the loss.
This Friday Weston will take on DeSoto at DeSoto. The Pirates received touchdowns from four players on their way to knocking the Hornets out of a tie for first place in the Ridge & Valley with a 27-6 win at Wauzeka.
The De Soto defense forced four Wauzeka turnovers — including Matt Paulsrud's eighth interception of the season — and converted a recovered fumble into an Andy Lee touchdown in the fourth quarter.
It was Lee's fifth TD of the season and gave the Pirates a 27-0 lead.
Sophomore Dylan Tully rushed for 74 yards and scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a 17-yard run in the third quarter.
