The Fay-Robinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored Julia Baird, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Baraboo resident, as the 2017 Community Service Award winner on Nov. 4.

In order to qualify for the award, the recipient must have contributed to the community in an outstanding manner through cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, citizenship or environmental conservation endeavors.

While studying for a semester in Madrid, Spain, and working with a church group there to help the homeless, Baird was driven to bring the experience back to the UW campus.

She and some friends prepared sandwiches one night a week and distributed them with inspirational notes to the homeless in Madison.
