Phyllis Jane (Eddy) Grotjahn, 97, of Prairie du Sac, passed away peacefully July 19, 2017, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg.
Phyllis celebrated life to the fullest every day and was devoted to her faith, family and friends. She was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of the late Walter and Marie Eddy. Phyllis married Edwin Arthur Grotjahn the “love of her life” on Sept. 3, 1940; he preceded her in death. They moved to Prairie du Sac from Minnesota in July 1946. Phyllis was an active member of the Concordia United Methodist Church since 1946 where she served as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Gleaners. She was a Girl Scout leader for years, played tennis and golf; she continued to play tennis until age 96.
Phyllis is survived by her three daughters, Gail (Walt Rudolph) Cooper, Nancy Maschman, and Edna Grotjan (Dennis Early) Early. She was very proud of her six grandchildren, Cami Rickenbacher, Craig Cooper, Tracy (Colm) Maschman, J.T. (Emily) Maschman, Annie Early, Joe (Lindsay) Early; and nine great-grandchildren; and her youngest brother, Darrell Eddy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ed Grotjahn in March 1996; a sister, Delores Niesen and brother, Walter Eddy; a son in-law, Terry Maschman. Phyllis spent the last 20 years out of 21 years as a “snowbird” in Homosassa, Florida, and was a member of the United Methodist Church there. Phyllis will be remembered for her “faith in action,” her kindness, her smile and compassion, but most of all for her devotion to her family. She will be fondly remembered for her homemade apple, cherry and rhubarb pies plus homemade plum and grape jelly.
A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Concordia United Methodist Church, 585 Fifth St., Prairie du Sac. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A reception will be held immediately following in the church hall.
Phyllis’s family is especially grateful to Sauk Prairie Hospital and Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, for their loving care and support during her final days. There are no adequate words to express our gratitude. Our sincere thanks are also extended to our mother’s devoted caretakers for the past 16 months.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in honor of Phyllis Grotjahn to the Alzheimer’s Association.
