I’m a progressive. I’ve attended many protests. I’ve been on the Sauk City Bridge protesting the Iraq War and during the Scott Walker recall effort. Along with members of Indivisible Sauk Prairie, I’ve been on the bridge monthly to protest the policies and actions of President Trump. People show support by honking and giving the thumbs up. Others give the thumbs down and a few, angered and threatened by opposing opinions, use the middle finger.
Last Saturday I was shocked because for the first time, in my hometown, a few drivers passed by giving the Nazi salute in reaction to signs supporting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Dreamers it protects. White supremacists have been emboldened by President Trump’s weak denunciation of their racist movement. They supported Trump, a candidate who exploited racial divisions and bigotry. Some use the sieg heil at Trump rallies. They believe their ideology is gaining acceptance and is part of what will “Make America Great Again”.
Americans must prove them wrong. Neo-Nazis and white supremacists’ beliefs will never be acceptable if we stand together and say “No, never again.” We must protect the democratic values that truly make America great.
