• Duane Brissette is the next artist to inhabit the River Arts Gallery in Prairie du Sac with his style of narrative surrealism from now to Oct. 18. The exhibit is available during school hours.

Now to Nov. 15

• Cleaner by Nature in Sauk City is collecting basic winter necessities during the "A Gift of Warmth" campaign from Sept. 15 to Nov. 15. The company is collecting gently used coats, snow pants, mittens, or hats along with other winter items. Items will be collected at Cleaner by Nature, 823 Phillips Boulevard in Sauk City or the St. Vincent de Paul store in Prairie du Sac. Everything will be cleaned and delivered to the Sauk Prairie School District to be given to local families in need. For more information, call 643-7300.

Oct. 7

• The Sauk City Fire Department Open House is from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the fire station, 505 Van Buren St. in Sauk City. There will be fire truck rides, Culver's custard, activities for the kids and station tours.

Oct. 8

• The National Farmers Union president will meet with Plain area farmers at 9 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Kraemer Library and Community Center, 910 Main St. in Plain. Discussion topic will be rural healthcare issues, the dairy crisis and other agriculture topics. Johnson will provide an update on issues as well as other union activities. The meeting is free and open to the public.

• Youth Environmental Projects of Sauk County will inspect trees at Devil's Lake State Park from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 8. The group will learn what to look for when checking the health of trees. Oct. 9 and 10

• The Harrisburg-Troy Historical Society will host a community sale from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 9 and from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the Railway Mall on Water Street in Sauk City. The event includes homemade pies, McNess vanilla and Pizza Plaza discount coupons. The proceeds will benefit the society.

Oct. 9, 16 and 23

• Community Business Bank of Sauk City and Lodi is offering free business breakfast seminars at its Sauk City location from 7:45 to 9 a.m. Oct. 9, 16 and 23. This is a seminar series on topics for today's business environment. The discussions are as follows: options in healthcare insurance coverage, networking basics and recruiting - "You can have a dream team." • Grady the Literacy Dog will visit the Sauk City Public Library to listen to area children read at 11 a.m. Oct 10, Nov. 14 and Dec 12. Children 4 years and older can register to read with Grady or stop in to see if he's available. Parental permission is required. To make reservations or for information, call 643-8346.

Oct. 11, 18 and 25

• Dance lessons for the country two-step is from noon to 1:15 p.m. Oct. 11, 18 and 25 at Park Hall, 307 Polk St. in Sauk City. The cost is $54 per person or $98 for two people. To register, call 643-3488.

Oct. 12

• The Save Sauk group will host an open discussion session at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Old Fair Valley School building next to Ace Hardware in Sauk City to discuss its version of Sauk City's downtown.

Oct. 12, 19 and 26

• The Sauk City Pizza Hut will donate a portion of each buffet sold on Oct. 12, 19 and 26 during the evening hours to the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club. Proceeds fund such child-related things as student of the month and middle level leader, badger state boys and girls, optimist oratorical contest and essay contest, the Sauk Prairie Recreation Department, scholarships, and a cure for cancer, to name a few.

Oct. 13

• Culver's in Sauk City is donating 10 percent of its sales to the Sauk Prairie Youth Football organization from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13. Proceeds will go towards equipment, referees, field maintenance, etc.

Oct. 22

• Sauk Prairie VFW Post No. 7694 will host a preventative health event for local residents on Oct. 22. It is offered by Life Line Screening and will be at the VFW Hall in Prairie du Sac. There are four vascular screenings that take about an hour and the cost is $149. To make an appointment, call 888-653-6441.

Oct. 24

• Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital will host a free medication take back day from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 located at a drive-thru at the main entrance of the hospital on Prairie Avenue in Prairie du Sac. Staff members will collect and safely dispose of any old, unneeded or expired vitamins, herbals, over-the-counter and prescription medications. Please keep the pills in the original labeled prescription bottles and scratch off name. Sharps containers will also be available upon request for used needles/ lancets. For the safety of volunteers, chemotherapy medications will not be collected.

Oct. 29

• St. Aloysius School will host a Halloween party from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 in the school gym. There will be food, games, prizes. A costume judging contest is at 7 p.m. followed by a pumpkin judging contest at 7:30 p.m.

• The Community Business Bank will host a free seminar, "Divorce In A Family Business" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the bank's Sauk City location, 1111 Sycamore St. Guest speaker is Attorney Linda S. • The Annual Living Well Expo, sponsored by the Aging & Disability Resource Center, will again host exhibitors and speakers on Oct. 29 at the Resource Center in Baraboo. A bus will depart at 8:30 a.m. at the Sauk Prairie Community Center in Sauk City and will return at 2:30 p.m. The expo will provide information on travel, social and recreational opportunities, library services, tax information, Lifeline, medical, etc. There will be free tetanus shots, hearing aide cleaning and blood pressure checks. • Sauk County Home and Community Education will host an alternative medicines educational session at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the West Square Building in Baraboo. Various medical professionals will address acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, and reflexology. The session is free and open to the public. • Saf-T-Funfest is from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at Bluffview, across from Badger Ammunition Plant on Highway 12. Children can enjoy Halloween festivities, carving pumpkins and a bounce house.

Nov. 2

• "The Path to Happiness," a community enrichment discussion is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Sauk City Public Library in the lower level meeting room. Guest speaker is Stuart Fields. Area Events

Now to Oct. 10

• This year's Koats for Kids campaign is collecting winter wear items now to Oct. 10. Area residents can donate gently-worn winter outerwear, non-leather caps, scarves and mittens (pinned in pairs). Donations can be taken to any Klinke Cleaners where they will be cleaned for free and turned over to the Community Action Coalition for distribution. All sizes are welcome — there is a higher demand for infant and toddler snowsuits and jackets, large teen jackets and oversized adult outerwear.

Oct. 8 and 22, Nov. 5 and 17

• UW-Baraboo/Sauk County will host a free lecture series starting Oct. 8 and focus on human health and sustainable nutrition in lecture hall A-4 in the lower level of the Umhoefer Classroom and Administration Building. All lectures start at 12:30 p.m. "The Basics of Organic Farming," discussion is Oct. 8 with guest speaker Mary Crow of Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative; "Food and Ethics" will be discussed on Oct. 22 with philosophy professor Dale Murray talking about the ethics of food production. Other lectures are: "Sustainable Farming in Today's World" on Nov. 5 with guest speaker Liz Doornik of Jon-De Farm and the last lecture is "Health Concerns and the Standard American Diet" on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Chemistry professor Tom Neal will discuss how the dietary habits of the average American have changed radically for the worse in the past 50 years. • Milwaukee comedian Chris Barnes will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Spring Green Fire Station during the Park Shelter Fundraiser. Comedian Lee Lycan is the opening act. Advanced tickets cost, $20 or $25 at the door. Tickets are available at the Spring Green General Store, The Shed, the Village of Spring Green office or the Spring Green Area Chamber of Commerce Office.
