Community celebrates giving
The Sauk Prairie area is celebrating Thanksgiving with a community celebration on Nov. 27. The annual free Thanksgiving dinner is at noon at the Sauk Prairie High School in the commons area.
According to a press release submitted by the Thanksgiving meal committee, since the dinner began 18 years ago, the community dinner was missed only one year. It began at St. Aloysius as a way to get a holiday meal to those who depend on home meal delivery and grew.
A couple turkeys have become several. Instead of just those who need meals delivered, the dinner opened to those who live alone, empty nesters, families with young children, basically everyone.
According to the press release, this dinner is a community effort. Members of First United Church of Christ and St. John's Lutheran Church will make the pies.
School children are creating placemats while area businesses and individuals make donations. The high school provides the kitchen and dining space.
Leftovers are packed up at the end of the meal and have been taken to such places as the Hope House.
According to the press release, those who would like to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with the trims but cannot attend it, there are home deliveries. To have a meal delivered or to volunteer to deliver the meals, call Rick or Judy Brager at 643-4240.
Other volunteer opportunities are available such as working on Wednesday or Thursday for set up, tables, serving, clean up or washing dishes. To volunteer, call Virgil and Ruth Ballweg at 643-4942.
Volunteers prepare food on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. On Thursday, volunteers are needed at 8 a.m.
