EDITORIAL: Eagle adopts new online technology

By Todd Krysiak, Sauk Prairie Eagle

If you’ve seen a televised newscast in the past month, it’s likely you’ve heard about twitter and tweets.

The part-blog, part-social networking site gives its users the ability to share short sentences that are intended to answer the simple question, "What are you doing?"

It’s become a powerful medium that most recently gained prominence in the fallout of the Iran elections as people sought to share their experiences and feelings amid a government crackdown on critics and media outlets.

In fact, we’re living through a digital revolution that continues to change the way people in our society communicate and it’s time for us to join in and participate.

Some Eagle readers already may have noticed that in May we posted video to YouTube after the Sauk Prairie Police Department released video of a robbery at Snap Fitness in Sauk City.

Last month, we posted video recorded during a pair of tense meetings of the Sauk Prairie Ambulance Service Commission as members of the organization aired their concerns and the commission responded.

Now we’ve taken the next step toward having a greater online presence by joining twitter. There, I will share information about articles we’ve posted on our Web site and stories we’re working on for our next edition.

For those of you who, like me, still prefer the version of the news that comes on paper and ink, don’t worry. The print edition of the Eagle will continue to be the primary focus of our attention. I consider our online presence to be an important supplement to the paper, but let’s face it; we are a newspaper, not a Web site, and that’s the way I think it should be.
