Capital Newspapers staff

The south/east bound Interstate 39 ramps at state Highway 60 in Columbia County will open at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The ramps have been closed since Nov. 2

The I-39 work zone extends 3.71 miles from the Dane County line north of Madison to Highway 60, a major route for weekend motorists traveling to and from Wisconsin Dells and the northern region of the state.

Motorists can get up-to-the-minute travel information by either dialing 511 or going to a Web site offered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The Web site, www.511wi.gov, provides travelers with traffic and road information on Wisconsin's main highways, including the interstate system.

The projects is aimed at improving safety and applying a new road surface. This portion of the interstate was built in 1959 and was last resurfaced in 1985.

Project cost is estimated at $14.4 million and is expected to wrap up this month.

Details on the I-39 safety barrier project can be found at www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/i39safetybarrier/index.htm.
