Joe Ax, 73, of Mazomanie - Published October 29, 2008

Joe Ax, 73, of Mazomanie, died on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 at HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg, with his wife by his side.

Mr. Ax was born on April 18, 1935 in Groningen, the Netherlands. He came to this country in 1957 and first settled in Chicago. He then moved to Greenlane, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo.; and finally Mazomanie.

Mr. Ax became a citizen of the United States on Feb. 6, 1964. He spent most of his work-life in America selling and installing packaging equipment for the food industry. This gave him the opportunity to travel all over the world, including China and Russia before he was forced to retire due to his health. 

Mr. Ax was married to his wife, Mary, on Sept. 17, 1990 in Madison. He enjoyed drives through the country as well as walks through parks and woods. He was very adventurous and enjoyed many new activities and places. He was fond of animals, but particularly of dogs.  He had a special bond with dogs and never met a dog he didn't like.

Mr. Ax is survived by his wife, Mary; his two sons, David Ax, of Harrisburg, Pa. and Michael Ax, of Asheville, N.C.; a sister, Willemina (Abel) Van Santen; niece, Annelise Van Santen; nephew, Halbe Van Santen, all from the Netherlands and many friends who live in the Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth (Kraak) and Halbe Ax and a daughter, Jamey Ax, in February, 2007.

A service was at HospiceCare, Inc.
