Ottilia “Tillie” Mittenzwei, 86, of Sauk City, is a Medford/Stetsonville native, died on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie.
Mrs. Mittenzwei was born in Medford on June 25, 1923, the daughter of the late John and Martha (Ludwig) Kapfhamer. She had the distinction of being the seventh one in line of 11 children, and the first one born in the United States. She was united in marriage to Arthur H. Mittenzwei on June 28, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Stetsonville.
The couple lived in Prairie du Sac when first married and then moved to Sauk City. They were 62 year members of St. Aloysius Parish, celebrating their 50th anniversary there in 1997.
Mrs. Mittenzwei was a stay-at-home wife and mother and helped her husband in his carpeting/linoleum business for many years until his retirement. She was a past president and member of St. Aloysius Christian Mothers and sang in the church choir for many years. She was also a member of the Jolly 16 Homemakers. She and her husband together, liked traveling, camping and fishing. She had a particular love of music, played several instruments and for several years kept busy singing in five different choruses.
Mrs. Mittenzwei is survived by her devoted husband, Arthur; four daughters, Karen (Bruce) Poffinbarger, of Stevens Point, Jayne (Donald) Couillard, of Marshall, Elaine Harvey, of Sauk City and Betty (Joseph) Niederklopfer, of Lyndon Station; two sons, Michael (Linda) Mittenzwei, of Prairie du Sac and Patrick (Martha) Mittenzwei, of Mazomanie; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Mercedes) Kapfhamer, of Stetsonville; three sisters, Helen Goessl, of Stetsonville, Viola Dickert of Land O’Lakes, Fla. and Leona (John) Stienmetz, of Slinger and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Andrew Kapfhamer, both of Medford; two sisters, Marie Lewandowski, of West Bend and Gertrude Bolz, of Anchorage, Alaska; twin siblings, Robert and Theresa who died shortly after birth in Browning, Saskatchewan, Canada and a grandchild, Sarah Ruhamah Harvey.
A Mass of Christian Burial is at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 7 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Sauk City with Fr. Jared Hood officiating. Burial is in the St. Aloysius Cemetery. A visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Hooverson Funeral Home in Sauk City where a rosary is at 6:45 p.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.
